You may have to get used to paying more for your groceries for another two years or more.

Experts say an increase in global food consumption combined with increasing use of crops such as corn and soybeans for alternative fuel production are partly to blame.

Agricultural economists who’ve studied food price fluctuations cite historical trends that show run-ups in farm commodity prices typically happen in five-year cycles.

Prices flare up in the first two to three years of the cycle and then start to moderate by the fourth or fifth year, said Chris Hurt, agricultural economist at Purdue University .

If 2007 was the first year of this latest cycle, Hurt said farm supply could start catching up to demand by 2010, helping to push down milk, bread, cereal and other grocery prices.

Until then, “Americans will be moving backward in their [food] lifestyle.” By that he means that more families will trade down to cheaper food alternatives, or eat out less often, in order to adjust their budgets to both higher food and fuel costs.

Wal-Mart, the No. 1 discounter and supermarket chain, said Tuesday that spending patterns in its stores already support the trend. The retailer said shoppers are buying more white meat and less red meat, stocking up on larger package sizes and buying more boxed frozen meals as eating at home replaces going out.

“This is the first price boom we’ve seen since the 1970s,” said Bill Knudson, professor of agricultural economics at Michigan State University, agreed. “There’s an old industry saying that high prices cure high prices. My personal opinion is that food prices will remain high for another two or three more years.”

The good news, however, is that “there’s no grave concern” of a pending food shortage in the United States, Hurt said.

Why Is Food More Expensive Now?

Experts point to four main global trends for the rise in food prices.

First, growing incomes in developing countries such as China, India, Malaysia mean citizens in these countries are eating better and more frequently, thereby putting more demand on the global food supply.

“People are consuming more quantity and higher-quality foods,” said Hurt. “They are eating more meats, eggs, grains and [drinking] milk.”

Second, adverse weather patterns over the past four years have harmed crop production in Australia, southern Europe, Ukraine and even parts of the United States.

American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) economist Jim Sartwelle said a prolonged drought in Australia – a major wheat and dairy producer – has led to big drops in world exports of wheat and milk.

Third, the United States is normally a big food surplus nation but, “with a weak dollar, there’s been a run on our pantry of food supplies,” Sartwelle said. “A lot of our excess production is going overseas and this is pushing up domestic prices.”

Fourth, burgeoning demand in the European Union and the United States for ethanol and other biofuels has sparked a price surge in corn, soybeans, sugarcane and other commodities used to produce those alternative fuels.

It’s not only consumers feeling the price pain, Sartwelle said.

He said that “even with higher retail prices, farmers and grocers get very little increase in their profit margin,” because it’s being offset by higher packaging costs, energy cost to produce and stock food and fuel to transport products.

Bill Ferriera, president of the Apricot Producers of California, also sees a bump-up in the costs of farming.

“Fertilizer costs have doubled from last year and farm labor availability is a big problem,” he said. “Many farmers are choosing not to grow produce that is labor intensive.”

Despite these food price hikes, Americans still spend only about 10% of their disposable income on food and beverage purchases per year, according to the Department of Agriculture.

That’s below the 15% share of disposable income that Europeans spend on food and drinks, and the whopping 70% that citizens of Pakistan and Bangladesh budget for consumables, said Hurt.

So even with a 4.5% expected rise in overall food prices, Americans, per person, will only spend an extra $87 this year on groceries, according to the Economic Research Service of the Department of Agriculture.

But that’s little consolation for consumers whose budgets are already stretched amid the the worst food price inflation in 17 years, according to government reports.

The latest nationwide quarterly survey from the AFBF, which tracks supermarket prices for 16 basic grocery items, showed the total cost of its basket of goods rose to $45.03 in the first quarter of 2008, up 8% from the prior quarter.

Products with the steepest retail price jumps were a 5-pound bag of flour, up 69 cents to $2.39; cheddar cheese, up 61 cents to $4.71 a pound; corn oil, up 58 cents to $3.01 a 32-ounce bottle; and dozen large eggs, up 55 cents to $2.16.

But higher prices aren’t here to stay, Hurt said. He’s confident that producers will allocate more land to production over the next two to three years. “I expect greater use of technology to increase crop yields and better use of genetics to create drought-tolerant crops,” he said.

Knudson said the United States this year is expected to dedicate 2 million acres of land from its federal Conservation Reserve Program to farming in order to increase production during lean times.

“In Canada more land will also be committed to farming this year,” he said. “All this should help to eventually increase food supplies through the [price] boom cycle.”

The study by Yale researchers also found the health claims made for kids’ cereals were often misleading. Cereals sold as low fat or low sugar were usually not lower in calories as parents might assume.

The report in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association also finds sugar accounted for more than one-third the weight of children cereals compared to adult cereals with about one-fourth.

Father, I’m praying for (name one or more) and others in my circle of family or friends in need of Your healing touch for their hurting hearts…

Some of them have received emotional wounds, some of them severe. Help them be willing to let you heal those hurts so they won’t become increasingly destructive over time, for You are the Lord who heals. (Exodus 15:26)

I come to You with the same spirit of helplessness and dependence that Moses had when he was leading Your people through the desert. They came to water, but it was bitter and the people had nothing to drink. Moses cried out to You, and You showed him a piece of wood; when he threw it into the water, the water became sweet. I’m now coming on behalf of these who are carrying emotional pain. In my heart I bring the wood of the cross, asking that Christ, who heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds, would bring healing to any bitterness He finds in their hearts. (Exodus 15:23–25; Psalm 147:3; Jeremiah 8:22)

No matter what pain they’ve suffered, help them not to give into anger, resentment, unforgiveness, or bitterness and become captive to sin. May their hearts not become calloused or hard, but refresh them in Christ. May they not lose heart but be inwardly renewed day by day. (Acts 8:23; Matthew 13:15; Psalm 95:8; Philemon 20; 2 Corinthians 4:16)

In Jesus’ name, amen.

Not all fast food meals are created equal. You have choices other than hamburgers. More and more fast food restaurants are offering healthy alternatives.

Most meals at fast food restaurants offer plenty of high-fat, high-calorie foods. Some burgers contain 800 calories or more. Throw in some large fries and you have fat overload. In just one meal, you have probably eaten your entire daily requirement of calories.

Fast food restaurants offer cheap food that is on your tray within minutes. This type of eating can add to the obesity epidemic, which has been steadily rising for the past 20 years as the popularity of fast food increases. These foods, often low in nutrition and high in fat, contribute to high cholesterol, high blood pressure and other serious diseases.

Take heart. Healthy eating at a fast food restaurant is possible. Here are some tips:

Skip the extras on your burger. Don’t go for the sauces, cheese or bacon. Instead choose lettuce, tomato and onion. Your best bet, however, is to not eat hamburgers at all or eat them only occasionally.

Don’t order foods with the words “double,” “ultimate,” “big” or “monster.” Fast food restaurants have new products using these terms. Skip them or you’ll be munching a monstrous dose of calories and fat.

Ask for a salad instead of fries. Use low-calorie or nonfat dressing and don’t add Chinese noodles or tortilla chips.

Choose salads that have lots of greens. A Caesar salad is a good choice. (You don’t have to use the Caesar dressing that comes with it.) Also look for salads with veggies such as broccoli or tomatoes.

Order nonfat milk or water instead of soda.

Instead of a burger, get a baked potato. Just don’t load it with sour cream, butter or cheese. Ask for these on the side and use sparingly.

Choose grilled or broiled foods. Many restaurants offer grilled chicken either on a salad or as a sandwich. Some even offer deli-style turkey. These can be tasty and a leaner alternative to burgers. Just don’t order them smothered in cheese or creamy sauces.

If you choose a fast food pizza restaurant, opt for hand-tossed or thin-crust pizza, avoid meat toppings, and eat only one or two slices.

Get the fruit cup, which some restaurants offer to go along with meals or in kid’s meals.

Skip the yogurt parfait. These can be loaded with calories.

Chew your food slowly. It takes 10 to 15 minutes for your brain to register that your body is full. Don’t feel compelled to eat everything.

Ask for Nutrition Facts information from the restaurant. The store should either have them posted or have a brochure. You can also check the restaurant’s Web site.

The bank tells you to be careful about tearing up the PIN that they send you with a new card. But did you know that there are more things that you can do to protect your number and that you should be doing these things to ensure that nobody tries to use your account? Debit cards are very attractive to would-be thieves because immediate cash is always more desirable than goods on a credit card. Here are some additional, simple steps for you to take to protect your PIN (personal identification number).

[edit] Steps

Never share the PIN with anyone. It might be tempting to trust a friend or a family member with your PIN but it is not a good idea. Circumstances can change and sometimes, people perceive a need more greatly than maintaining your trust or worst still, a person you do trust might be placed in a compromising position with a third party and be obliged to reveal your PIN under harassment or threat. It is better not to put this to the test, ever.

Never give out your PIN in response to e-mail or telephone requests. Phishing scams are unsolicited e-mails asking for bank account details, passwords and PINs. Delete them without a second thought and never respond to them.[1] Also, never provide your PIN over the telephone; there is never a need to do this and it will always be a fraudulent request. [2]

Shield your PIN when using it. Use your hand, a checkbook, a piece of paper etc. to shield the PIN as you enter it into a bank machine or a store machine. Be especially vigilant in store queues, where somebody may be paying more attention than you. Also, be wary of “card skimmers” at ATMs; they use scanners run over the card slot to lift debit card details and they find your PIN details via camera or looking. If you shield your PIN input well, they are hampered in their attempt.[3]

Choose a PIN password that is not obvious. Your birth date, wedding anniversary, phone number and home address are obvious picks, so just do not use them. Instead, think of numbers unrelated to major events and addresses in your life to create your PIN.[4]

Do not write your PIN down on the card, ever. Do not even write it in a diary. If you must write it down, disguise it in some way or put it somewhere totally unrelated to the card, such as in the middle of Shakespeare’s Complete Works.

Vary your PIN on different cards. Don’t keep the same PIN for all your cards. Have a different PIN for each one, so that if you do happen to lose your wallet, it will be much harder for the PINs to be cracked.

Contact your bank immediately if your card is stolen or lost. Tell them immediately if you think that there is anything that may compromise your PIN, such as an easy PIN, other ID in your wallet making it easy to work out or, horror of all horrors, the PIN being written down somewhere in the wallet or on the card. Get the bank to cancel the card immediately.

Be proactive. If you suspect any fraudulent activity using a card still in your possession, apart from notifying the bank and the police, have your PIN changed immediately.

[edit] Tips

If you are a very forgetful person, try to memorize the PIN using memory techniques.

One way to create a PIN that is also easy to remember is to translate a word into numbers (like on a telephone keypad). Ex: Wiki would be 9454. ATM keypads often have letters printed alongside the numbers.

One technique that works for PINs is to divide them into two groups of two digits and treat each as a year – so that, say, 8367 becomes 1983 and 1967 – and then find some event that corresponds to each year. Each event should be something personal, known only to you, or something historical but relatively obscure. From these, divise an amusing and odd phrase linking the two events, from which the events themselves, and thus the dates, cannot be easily deduced. Note this phrase down rather than the PIN itself.

Respect the privacy of others using ATMs and card swipe machines; give them space and don’t stare at the keypad.

March 27 (Bloomberg) — General Motors Corp., Toyota Motor Corp. and other large carmakers may have to sell more plug-in electric autos in California as the state adjusts exhaust rules to account for slow development of newer types of clean engines.

California’s Air Resources Board today proposed cutting the number of required battery-only and hydrogen fuel-cell autos sold in the state to 2,500, a tenth the initial requirement, in model years 2012 through 2014. The six biggest carmakers would instead have to sell a combined 75,000 plug-in hybrids and cars that burn hydrogen instead of gasoline.

Any changes to the emissions rules would influence the types of advanced cars GM, Toyota, Ford Motor Co., Chrysler LLC, Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co. sells in California, which accounts for 10 percent of all new autos sold in the U.S. A shift in California also would affect carmakers’ sales in the 12 other states that have joined the Zero Emission Vehicle program.

“Fuel-cell vehicles are farther from commercial readiness than expected, due primarily to durability and cost hurdles,” ARB researcher Analisa Bevin said at a hearing in Sacramento. “Battery electric vehicles also continue to face cost concerns.”

California has forced carmakers since 1990 to offer vehicles powered by batteries, hydrogen or a blend of electricity and gasoline to curb exhaust.

More than 200 representatives of automakers, advocates for battery-powered cars and hydrogen fuel-cell companies gathered in Sacramento for the public hearing, the first review of the ZEV program in five years.

Driving Range

Hybrid gasoline-electric vehicles increase fuel efficiency by combining a battery-powered electric motor and a gasoline engine. Plug-in vehicles can be charged at an electrical outlet, and offer a greater electric driving range than conventional hybrids such as Toyota’s Prius.

Plug-in hybrids, such as GM’s proposed Volt model, can travel at least 40 miles solely on battery power before needing to be recharged at an electrical outlet. The model can also be recharged by an on-board motor powered by fuels such as gasoline. GM plans to sell the Chevrolet Volt as early as 2010.

Toyota announced plans in January to lease plug-in cars to U.S. fleets by 2010.

California, alone among U.S. states, has authority to set air-quality rules that exceed federal standards. The state has done so since the 1970s, when it initially required the use of catalytic converters to help reduce smog-forming auto emissions.

California regulators today also proposed changing requirements for the 2015 through 2017 model years, reducing the number of fuel-cell and battery-only electric cars to 25,000 from an initial target of 50,000. Additionally, carmakers would have to sell a combined 83,000 plug-in or hydrogen-burning vehicles. The plug-in cars would have to be able to travel at least 10 miles solely on battery power.

But several studies over the years have found that talking on a hands-free device is not much safer than talking on a hand-held device.

A study by the American Psychological Association of over 500 drivers found that talking on a cell phone cut activity in areas of the brain used for driving by half. Drivers focusing on a phone conversation had slower reaction times, were less likely to recall objects on the road, and had a hard time noticing traffic around them. Researchers also noted that hands-free devices in the car posed the same hazards as hand-held devices.

A different study by the University of Utah tested drivers’ use of hands-free cell phones on the road, and found (to no one’s surprise) that chatty drivers were the main cause of traffic problems. Apparently, drivers talking on a cell phone were less likely to change lanes, and spent more time following slow-moving vehicles.

The latest research by Carnegie Mellon University questions hands-free laws, and whether their existence only gives drivers a false sense of safety. To test this theory, neuroscientist Marcel Just studied 29 volunteers who used a driving simulator inside an MRI brain scanner. The volunteers were tasked with driving a car along a virtual winding road, with and without distractions.

Researchers found that drivers would hit the guardrail and veer out of the center of the lane more often when they tried to answer true or false questions. Brain scans of the distracted drivers showed brain activity decreased in areas that process visual and spatial information, functions that are crucial for navigation. Once again, this proved that participating in a conversation is all it took to reduce a driver’s focus on the road.

As reported in This is London, Just concluded:

Drivers need to keep not only their hands on the wheel, they also have to keep their brains on the road. Drivers’ seats in many vehicles are becoming highly instrumented cockpits and during difficult driving situations they require the undivided attention of the driver’s brain.

The clear implication is that engaging in a demanding conversation could jeopardise judgment and reaction time.

So while there may be laws out there that ban the use of hand-held phones behind the wheel, the truth is the road will remain a dangerous place as long as drivers continue to carry phone conversations on hands-free devices – so be careful out there.
